Code Remix brings coding to life through a fun and engaging workshop that unlocks computer science opportunities for middle and high school students in historically underrepresented communities.
Within our program, students create their own musical beat (or composition) using computer programming and explore the essential question:

Free Online Coding Classes
Educators lead students through an interactive workshop where students create musical beats using JavaScript block-based coding and ultimately participate in a beat showcase where they share their work with peers.
This workshop is intended to be accessible to all participants. No prior experience with coding or beat making is necessary for anyone!
Code Remix participants will receive a free account from CODEHS. Students will be able to continue to have access to their personal beats and participate in other online coding classes!

Boom-BAP Beat Making Available For Students Ages 13 and Older
During the workshop session, students will have the opportunity to showcase their beat to the class and/or submit their beat to an online contest.
Top winner of the online contest will receive an Oculus Quest!

Design
Code Remix is created with block-based programming. Students use a visual drag-and-drop environment (instead of typing) to create music programs. This enables a system that easy to pick up and understand starting layouts of code.

Engineering
After understanding the layout of code, we encourage students to customize beat measurements and patterns for their preferred music genre. The program allows them to start from scratch, a template or add original sounds.

Innovation
Through this experience, students will learn some basic computer language, get creative and see that coding has many applications that include artistic expression and potentially so much more!
The Potential Of Coding
Our team has been exploring the common ground between music and computer programming. With the newly developed Boom-BAP Music Program, students explore the nuances between the two making them readily available for anyone with a computer.
